The Omani Students Society of Victoria (OSSV) is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 by the first Omani student group that arrived to Melbourne. It began very simple with simpler goals. The main goal was creating an umbrella that embraces all Omanis and provides them with “a feel of home” away from the hurdles of studies and university routines. The success and extent of popularity and respect that OSSV have gained over a short period of time was very impressive.

The OSSV fast became a unique representation of the collective Omani presence in Australia. As a result of such success, the organization was officially recognized in 2003 by His Excellency Dr Yahya bin Mahfoodh Al-Manthari, Minister of Higher Education at that time.

From that moment on, a new era for the future of the OSSV had commenced. The number of members increased rapidly and elections were opened to the members which resulted in the first official administration board

As time passed on, every year held a new set of goals and inspirations that OSSV successive administrations strived to achieve. Targeting and integrating with the Australian society fast became a high level priority for the organization. The society, therefore, took upon itself the conveyance and delivering of the distinct Omani culture to the Australian multi-cultural community through remarkable participations and contributions in exhibitions, social works and charitable events.

The OSSV is funded by the members’ contributions with some assistance from the Omani government. All Omani students become members as soon as they step out of Tullamarine Airport but the membership is activated by paying the membership fees. The fees cover all activities and members are not charged any additional fees for attending unless circumstances demand.

The status that the OSSV stands at now, has not been achieved overnight; it is rather the outcome of years of collective work and strong well of more than 900 members who have never believed in the impossible. Each new administration board takes on where the previous had left off.

Founders of the OSSV had set a principle that all successors have taken on their shoulders the obligation of safeguarding… “The OSSV will live as long as there is an Omani soul on the Australian soil”.
